About our introductory articles

The first of female pro manga authors in Japan is Hasegawa Machiko who had written Sazae-san from April 1946 to February 1974. She began it right after the Japanese government accepted the Potsdam Declaration, that is to say.

Sazae-san is a Japanese comedy manga whose main character is Isono Sazae, a Japanese lady in 20s who lives in Fukuoka although she moves to Tokyo after a while. Today, Sazae-san is a national comic in Japan.

Substantially, Sazae plays its main role until the middle point of the manga. From the middle stage, who plays a main character is Isono Katsuo. He is a younger brother of Sazae. Katsuo is 11 years old and a close-cropped boy. You can find him often since the middle of Sazae-san.

Although there is a 16 years' difference between Sazae and Katsuo, Katsuo has great worldly wisdom as Sazae and their father are kind of astonished at his actions. Perhaps he is sly a little. No readers would deny his personality, however, works well as some secret ingredient in Sazae-san.

Generally speaking, what you need for surviving in this world well is to be shrewd. Needless to say, it is important to be a man of integrity. But it is also crucial to act cleverly and to be not disliked by anybody, in any organizations and communities. It is real there are some unable to adapt to the truth. For them, Katsuo is here in the manga. Enjoyably, reading Sazae-san makes you learn to be cleverer.

Regardless, nobody dislikes Katsuo. He is almost a boy who cried wolf as Sazae and their parents seldom trust what Katsuo says. However, he is not disliked. Actual reading could let you understand. No readers would hate him heartily.

Katsuo was liked by readers in Showa era and even by Hasegawa Machiko. So increased was his time to get on the manga. Exactly, he must have been the most successful of the characters.

Namihei, his father, says Katsuo could make a better job of life than Namihei. Whenever reading Sazae-san, we find the new charm of Katsuo interestingly.
