About our introductory articles

The Obon Holidays have gone this year again. Many kinds of Obon events are supposed to have been held in each area of Japan. Surprisingly to Osaka people (me), in Nagasaki, it is said that they usually set off firecrackers flamboyantly in front of their families' graves. I want to try but I am sorry that I have no graves to visit in Nagasaki. Oh my!

Why do they do so? History only knows. Nagasaki is a special region that had been a window for international relations while Japan had imitated China and closed the door. It means different countries' customs could root in Nagasaki. I guess setting off firecrackers in front of graves is one of them. Gunpowder and firecrackers were developed in China, not Japan.

Hajima island (Nagasaki city)

Letting alone such a historic view, I'd like to pick up a geographic feature of Nagasaki. Nagasaki has the second longest marine shoreline in Japan. No.1 is Hokkaido, by the way. It means there are a party of fishes in Nagasaki. Visiting Nagasaki, you can almost eat tasty dishes using fresh marine products. Well, I am difficult to have raw seafood and then, hardly feel the benefit.

Nagata Shokuhin produces "Hirato Sakana Soy-sauce" which consists of salt, sea cabbage, dried bonito and anchovy. I heard it was so mild that it suited fried food very much. Not so traditional, but it seems solidly based on a special feature of Nagasaki.

Moreover, Nagasaki is a prefecture of the sea, which means they produce a lot of salt from the ocean there. In old times, they were difficult to make salt there. Nagasaki has a lot of peninsulas and islands, which means there are seldom good areas for salt making. Technical development made it able. Getting in stores in Nagasaki, You can easily find Nagasaki-made salt products there.
