About our introductory articles

Gyokuro is the highest kind of Japanese green tea. It is said it is not for satisfying your throat, but your senses. “Gyokujun” is the Gyokuro produced by Yamamoto-yama. In fact, they invented the kind for the first time. So you can find what it is with drinking “Gyokujun.”

First, I must explain about Gyokuro. It is basically the same kind as sencha (green tea) and they produce by a different way. When cultivating, they cover their tea plantations with something like reed screens in order to separate from sunlight. It holds down the bitter taste and grows flavor up. Usually, what they covered over 20 days is called “Gyokuro.” The shorter is “Kabuse cha.”

Kind: Indefinite

Tea Kind: Gyokuro
Price: 2,000 JPN + tax / 100 g
Leaching Time: 2 - 3 min.

You may guess it sounds kind of dark-natured. But its unique smell called Oh-ika (Covered Perfume) is made thus. The tea water color is yellow. It is said the clearer it looks, the higher it grades usually.

Now, the origin of Gyokuro was invented by the sixth of Yamamoto-yama in 1835. By the way, Yamamoto-yama is a truly old maker established in 1690. Recently, they have sold tea, snacks and seaweed though used to deal with paper and tea in the beginning.

Yamamoto-yama uses tea leaves produced in Kyoto and then, it is not the one in Tokyo where their main office stands in. But it surely holds history of the refined green tea. I hope you enjoy the flavor and the unique perfume with “Gyokujun” someday.
