The first single record was released on 14. 12. 1983. Originally, the song was the last song on his seventh album“MELODIES”out on 8. Jun of 1983. Though the album became No.1 on the weekly hit chart in Japan,“Christmas Eve”was at first dull. It was unable to rank among the best 30, let alone the first prize.
But the song kept being spread among Japanese because of being used on TV-CF and played on radio programs. And the song has got large sales every time December comes. It became No.1 on the weekly single chart in Dec. of 1989. The sales of the song reached a million in 1991. Until today, it has sold over 1,820,000. That’s the best seller single home among singles out in the 1980’s.

The song surely ranked among the best 100 on the weekly chart of the beginning of this year. That means it has still kept being spread among Japanese. A rock band in Japan, Porno Graffiti has published a song“Hard Days, Holy Night”in 2003. The song includes a parody of a part of“Christmas Eve.”As that, it is not too much to say that the Christmas song became of a part of Christmas in Japan. Will the song be naturally listened somehow again in next December.
