About our introductory articles

Today, I'm talking about "Winter in Riviera" by Mori Shin-ichi. He is a Japanese Enka singer who made his debut in 1966. He released the "Winter in Riviera" in 1982 November. By the way, Riviera means seashore in Italian.

First, I have to explain what Mori Shin-ichi is. He is officially an Enka singer but does not like to be called so. He'd originally desired to be a pop singer, however, his master Ishiguro Toshikazu decided to let him make his debut as an Enka singer. Ishiguro thought Mori's character was cut out for Enka.

By the way, one of Mori's sons is Taka of ONE OK ROCK.

Anyway, the unwilling Enka singer Mori Shin-ichi could finally release his pop-like song "Winter in Riviera" in 1982.

Who wrote the "Winter in Riviera?" The lyrics by Matsumoto Takashi who had wrote "Ruby no Yubiwa (The Ruby Ring)" in 1981, "Momen no Handkerchief (The Cotton Handkerchief)" in 1975. Composed by Otaki Ei-ichi whose 1981 studio album "A Long Vacation" had become a mega hit.

In fact, Matsumoto and Otaki had originally belonged to a Japanese rock band "Happy End." The band fell apart in early 1970's, but the members established the basis of Japanese rock. For instance, the bassist Hosono Haruomi formed the Yellow Magic Orchestra and became worldwide popular. I'm very sorry but you can never see the band because Otaki already passed away in 2013.

Let's get back to "Winter in Riviera" now.

"Winter in Riviera" can be said as Ultimate Pop Song, therefore. In other words, Mori shows the different character by the song.

If you are almost unfamiliar with Enka, the song will be a good entrance!
