March 11. 2011, we Japanese got the Tohoku Earthquake which took away a lot of property and many lives. Painful days from the earthquake let a poem so well-known over again. A poetess in Taisho Era; Kaneko Misuzu wrote the poem; Kodama Deshou-ka.

During 2011 spring, most of companies practiced self-control in information activities and we had found nothing but AC Japan at commercial breaks for a while. They had used Kodama Deshou-ka of Kaneko Misuzu on their TV advertisement. As responding to the voices which said people desired to know her poetry more, urgently released was 100 Selected Poems of Kaneko Misuzu.

April 11. 1903, Kaneko Misuzu was born in Yamaguchi prefecture and she passed away as young as 26 years old on March 10th. 1930. For her short life, she wrote 512 poems. Kaneko Misuzu won the high praise as the supernova among nursery song writers, from Saijo Yaso; a late poet who had written words of a popular song; Aoi Sanmyaku.

Her works had hidden away before and after World War 2 and they were gradually reassessed in the early 1980s. As Univ. of Tokyo used her poem Tairyou on their entrance examination in 1985, her poems got rated highly among all Japanese again.

In 2006, they put a song on her poem and it was on-aired as a part of Minna no Uta; a program of Japan Broadcasting Corporation. That must still be fresh in Japanese memory.

It is truly very sad Tohoku Earthquake happened and many said goodbye. However, it also made her great poems get closer again. Good or bad? It is a silly question since regardless her poems have really been beautiful.

They say Yamaguchi thrived on whaling at the time Kaneko Misuzu lived in. So we can see her poems include reverence for the Mother Nature a lot. We might learn from her poetry again today in the sense.
