Kitahara Ryukichi, a.k.a. Kitahara Hakushu is regarded as one of the most important poets in modern Japanese literature and the Poetical Works of Kitahara Hakushu is a good entrance to his world.

Born in 1885 to a family of sake brewery, Kitahara had affectionately studied poetry. When he was 16 years old, he lost his house for a big fire but never lost his zeal at all.

Kitahara joined the Shinshisha ( New Poetry Association ) to devote himself into studying poetry in 1906 and made friends with some popular poets like Yosano Akiko, Yosano Tekkan, Ishikawa Takuboku and so on. It is said the relations let him improved.

2 years later, he left the association and formed the Pan no Kai ( The Society of Pan ) as his own literature group which existed for all kinds of artists like painters and musicians, not just poets. In 1909, he published his first poetry collection; Jashu-mon. And then, Kitahara Hakushu had one by one released a lot of masterpieces in several categories as children’s poems until he passed away in 1942.

The Poetical Works of Kitahara Hakushu was firstly published in 1950. They carefully screened from all his works. As it were, the book includes the best selection of his poems.

His style is, so to speak, a mixture of Japanese aesthetic sense and exoticism. Pure like water trickling from rocks, but it also perfumes sensual a lot. His poems read natural libido and purity.

Not only selected poems, it has some of his children’s song like Karatachi no Hana. For entering modern Japanese literature and Kitahara works, you had better read The Poetical Works of Kitahara Hakushu.
