About our introductory articles

The Easygoing Womankind Club is a Japanese conversation book published by Kodan-sha in 1993. It contains talks by the two housewives, Kera Eiko and Hayase Kuniko. They talked about their duties in each life. It was released as a paperbook in 1993, but out of print today in 2019. And there's nothing but the Japanese edition. When you'd like to check it, I suppose you have to look for at public libraries, antiquarian shops or online stores.

Who are they? you might ask. Kera Eiko is a Japanese female manga artist born in 1962 Tokyo. Atashin-chi (1994-2012) is her representative work. It had been animated on TV Asahi. I suppose she is almost famous for essay manga in Japan. Hayase Kuniko (1959-?) was a Japanese magazine editor. She is never well-known. In Japan, most editors are unpopular. I almost have nothing about her. So I cannot tell you how she is doing now. And I'm not inclined to investigate. She anyway appeared as a housewife originally from Hokkaido in this book. I have nothing more to add, don't I?

Why did such a nameless editor appear in the book? The book says all of the chapters were originally serialized in a woman magazine. What went on? One day, Kera got asked to serialize for the magazine. Then, she found Hayase Kuniko who worked as an assistant editor. Her sixth sense told she had to serialize with Hayase. Hayase agreed, and it began to go on. By the way, you can never find the magazine because it already got out of print in 2004.

Kera Eiko is a manga artist as mentioned above. Then, most pages of the book show manga illustrated by her. And sometimes she talked about each theme with Hayase Kuniko.

What on earth do they tell you? They, housewives around age 30 at the time, frankly talked about their own lives. How hard women were spending their lives with men, how hard women went on as women, they talked.

For instance, in one chapter, they frankly talked about depilation. Kera said she had hairy forehead and it was pretty hard to maintain. Hayase agreed light and introduced an example of a man (age 29). He got greatly shocked at finding his wife take care of her body hair after marriage. Kera said he was too green to be a man. There were no women who had never been annoyed by body hair, Hayase said.

I don't know what you will take from this book, since I am not you. However, I'm sure it includes truth of the two housewives (around age 30).
