About our introductory articles

Hello, everyone. Today I'm talking about "Tatetsuku Futari" (The Defying Two) here. It consists of coversations by Mitani Koki and Shimizu Michiko. The illustrations by Wada Makoto, published by Gentosha in 2011.

First, I have to explain who they are. Mitani Koki is a Japanese popular playwright, screenwriter, and film director born in 1961. I believe that you are pretty difficult finding other comedy playwrights more popular than him in Japan. Shimizu Michiko is a Japanese popular female impressionist born in 1960. They are both well-known thru TV screens in Japan.

Why did they talk? In fact, the conversations were not recorded for publishing a book. From 2005 to 2014, the two persons had went on a radio program "Making Sense" during the decade. Some of the talks became letters on the book. The conversation book series consist of the four volumes.

1st: Mukatsuku Futari (The Disgusted Two), 2007
2nd: Iratsuku Futari (The Angry Two), 2008
3rd: Kamitsuku Futari (The Biting Two), 2009
4th: Tatetsuku Futari (The Defying Two), 2011

You can begin to read at each volume, since there's no continuity.

What do their talks give to you? I don't know because it's all down to you. What you take from your reading is all up to you. See? Some may say that you can't enjoy the talks when you are ignorant about the two at all. I am not willing to deny the opinion. If you read nothing but the books written by those you know well, however, how can you attain full growth?

It looks like the two did just chat for minutes. But I believe that they are both usual persons in Japan. Then, through reading their talks, you can (maybe) get some tendancy of the way how Japanese people usually feel and guess. Of course, it includes some talks about Japanese popular actors like Nakai Kiichi. So you can (maybe) get what they are really.
