About our introductory articles

Yoshimoto Banana is a Japanese popular female novelist who was born in 1964 Tokyo. And she made her debut with her virgin story "Kitchen" in 1987. Many people kept their eyes on her virgin story. She got a lot of popularity inside and outside Japan. Some of her works have been translated in foreign languages like English, Italy, French and Chinese. Adultery and South America is a short story collection of hers released in 2000 March, that includes 7 short stories.

In the latter of 1980's, came to the fore and became popular some female novelists like Ogawa Yoko and Kakuta Mitsuyo. Banana was one of them. Why? 80's is the times that women gradually began to rise up in Japanese society. In 1980, Matsuda Seiko made her debut and became so popular. She didn't hide her desires at all and many Japanese people accepted the way she was. It means desire of women was accepted by Japanese society in 1980's.

In 1985, the Equal Employment Operation Law was established. And in 1989, Doi Takako from the Socialist Party became popular. The more Japan society accepted women, the more women rose up. Yoshimoto Banana also appeared by the context. What does it mean? In her early career, she had to show how women lived their lives and what way women were. In other words, she had to describe the way men and women were. It was no her duty. Some of her fans surely supported her in the hope, however.

Adultery and South America, I believe, is the fruit of her early career. In the 7 stories, she showed 7 ways men and women were. And all stories surely taste Yoshimoto Banana. No doubt about it. So you can enjoy even if you have been unfamiliar with her stories. In other words, this collection can be the very first step for Banana beginners.
