About our introductory articles

In 2018, Mikakuto began to launch Isojin Cough Drops. Mikakuto is a Japanese candy manufacturer standing in Osaka.

I think most are unfamiliar with "Isojin." What is it? you might think. That's a trademark of povidone iodine. The trademark is pretty popular in Japan. If you have never been to Japan, I'd like you to ask Japanese people "Have you ever used Isojin when you got something wrong in your throat?" when you are with them in Japan. They will probably answer somehow without a question "What is it?" unless they are unfamiliar with English.

Well, the trademark is registrated, not by Mikakuto, by Mundipharma. They are a global pharmaceutical company established in 1952 America.

In 1961, they began to co-operate with Meiji Seika (Meiji) in order to launch "Isojin" all over Japan. Without Meiji, it couldn't have been so popular in Japan, we can say. Actually, Mundipharma had just supplied some active constituents until 2015. In 2015 December, Mundipharma declared dissolving a partnership with Meiji Seika Pharma out of the blue.

Why did they kick the partnership off? In the drug field, Japan is the second largest market only after the United States. Multinational corporations cannot essentially keep existing without keeping investment on and on. However, over the world, it is pretty difficult to find the targets to invest in today. So it is not a mystery that they decided to consolidate their presence in Japan, the large market of the drugs.

Probably, they are forming mergers and acquisitions with some companies in Japan. At least, in 2015, it is considered that they had such a plan.

Trying to consolidate their presence in Japan, they released the cough drops in co-operation with Mikakuto. How will it be appraised in Japan's market? I don't know.
