About our introductory articles

Japanese traditional festival in March is, before everything, Hina-matsuri (Dolls’ Festival). On March 3, they display the traditional dolls if they had any daughters, and pray that she can grow up in safety and be happy. In a part of Tohoku region, they are said to hold the festival on April 3.

In the Mogami district of Yamagata, they routinely have “Kujira Mochi” on Dolls’ Festival Day. Mochi means rice cake in Japanese. What kind of rice cake is Kujira Mochi? First, make non-waxy rice and waxy rice small-grained for soaking in water for several days. Next, you must stretch and then, steam with something like sugar and walnuts. Then, it is completed.

That is a standard in Yamagata. It is said that they used to make in common families. You are the best to eat while being soft, but it is not bad you roast the hardened and have the ones. Each family makes the unique taste.

By the way, it is said Kujira Mochi was about to be acknowledged as official emergency food of Japan in the early times of Heisei era. Kijira Mochi cannot keep good for several years and then, was not approved finally.

That episode means Kujira Mochi is the popular traditional confectionery in Yamagata. You must have the rice cake if you were there in springtime.
