Horai's Buta-mans, also called "551 Buta-mans," are made in Osaka and very famous not within Osaka however over Japan for the tastiness. No doubt those are one of Osaka specialty.
Their Buta-mans are the comfort food of Osaka. And the executive president Mr. Tanaka kept on appearing on the TV commercial familiar among people in the Kinki district.
He is also a walking dictionary about Horai, because he's worked there for 50 years.
Now, let's knock on the door to Mr. Tanaka together!
■ So honored to see you! Let me hear your story, now, about the time you joined Horai.
Tanaka Ichisho: I met Ra Hokyo, the Horai founder, at the first time on the introduction of my seminar teacher. The present president of Horai is the third, a grandchild of the founder.
Ra Hokyo was from Taiwan. He was managing Horai with a feeling to improve Japan by his Taiwan experience. Horai originally means an earthly paradise although they had only 7 branch stores at the time. It was novel for me that he the president had an interview himself, before everything else.
■ You'd worked in food business before you joined Horai?
T: I had. My father passed away in my childhood and I was so poor with a lot of appetite as I could have eaten 4 times a day. To work in food business brought a meal to me. That was a welcome gift to a poor youngster.
■ I see. How was the first interview?
T: "Think it over in your home" said Ra Hokyo at the first interview. I didn't have any feelings waiver. However, at the second, he said "Think hard. It makes you not worse to think" again. Finally, he told me to make a decision whether I would join or not.
He said "You have to make two important decisions in your life. Marriage and employment. You must think hard when you are facing them." I was deeply touched by his serious attitude with the eye contact. Maybe his fatherhood charmed me who had lost my father, which made me join this company Horai.
■ By the way, when did you get married?
T: When I was 28 years old. Although I tried to get married when I was 27, somehow it made one year later.
■ There was deliberation, wasn't there?
T: I guess I should have considered more. LOL No, no, I have a precious wife now. Being fine on stomach and mouth is better than anything! She often complains and I hardly talk back. Lately, our daughter has joined there and I am always without resistance. LOL
■ Too bitter! LOL Well, being a hearty eater is...
T: Very important!
