About our introductory articles

Godzilla, a Japanese Kaiju film released in 1954, is very popular and important as the origin of Japanese films with special effects after the World War 2. That movie was produced by Tanaka Tomoyuki, directed by Honda Ishiro and by Tsuburaya Eiji, who is world-widely famous as a father of Japanese special effects for a film, in special effects.

The story begins at sinking of some Japanese ships. A man, who was luckily helped, testified that their ship had sunk because a giant monster had suddenly attacked. An old man heard that and said the monster must have been Godzilla, a legendary monster. Godzilla was awakened by an H-bomb test and the giant monster started to attack Tokyo. How should men do against the giant monster awakened by a factitious experiment?

Ifukube Akira, a late composer in Japan, was in charge of the film score. He composed the main theme of Godzilla and the song is still very popular as the theme of Godzilla. They say he produced the song in belief that the film was going to be watched also by children and that was why the film music had to be true.

The film is not only of entertainment, also of some appeal to human society. Surprisingly, the theme can hold good for present social conditions enough. Also, played dramas are effectively marvelous although it is in monochrome. And first of all epochal special effects produced by Tsuburaya Eiji, all of these tell Godzilla is a true masterpiece in Japanese movies.

Most of journalists castigated Godzilla though the film broke the opening day mobilization record of Toho at the time. However, they say Mishima Yukio, Tezuka Osamu and Yodogawa Nagaharu eulogized. Time passed by, Godzilla was introduced to people all over the world and became the representative of Kaiju.
